Questioning Children Music Today

“kau bidadari jatuh dari surga di hadapanku. Eeaa
Kau bidadari jatuh dari surga tepat di hatiku. Eeaa
So baby please be mine, please be mine, oohh eeaa
Karena hanya aku sang pangeran impianmu
eeaa eeaa eeaa eeaaa  eeeaaa”
(“Eeaa” by Coboy Junior)

“Kamu kamu kamu curi perhatianku
Ingin selalu dekat denganmu
Malu malu malu ku tapi mau
Kau tlah merubah duniaku
You changed my world
You changed my world
(“Mau tapi Malu” by Bessara)

Of course, when you read lyrics above, you will recognize that both of the songs are a love songs, sung by Coboy Junior- a kid boyband with  4 kids as personel and Bessara—a kid girlband with 4 kids as personel.  Those song are so much well known among children. Children often sing  them. Though, neither  of those songs is suit with children. An ironic, I think.

Children are supposed to sing something which still suit with their world, not a teenage’s world—love, dating. However, in fact, most of children is exposed with love song, which is ironically sung by kids too. They (the kid singers) seem like stepping over their ages, talking about love in their song, meanwhile I think they do not really know what the love is!

There is no more song for children like pelangi, bintang kecil, aku anak sehat, balonku, naik delman, desaku, kasih ibu, lihat kebunku, etc, which tell about things that are not only educating, but also matching with the kid’s scope. A scope where they (children) are able to know common stuff around them, such as pelangi, bintang kecil, kebun, delman, kebun, etcIn addition, those song, not only teaching about what pelangi or bintang kecil looks like but also teaching about moral value, as we can meet in pelangi and kasih ibu.
Pelangi
“Pelangi, pelangi
Alangkah indahmu
Merah, kuning, hijau, di langit yang biru
Pelukismu agung siapa gerangan?
Pelangi, pelangi ciptaan Tuhan”

Kasih Ibu
“Kasih Ibu kepada beta
Tak terhindar sepanjang masa
Hanya memberi, tak harap kembali
Bagaikan sang surya menyinari dunia

The songs above show us how great God’s creation is and how sweet mother’ s love is, educating children to be always grateful and love their mom. Compare with “Eeaa” that indirectly leads children to know love and date prematurely  as written in lyric “So baby please be mine, please be mine, oohh eeaa. Karena hanya aku sang pangeran impianmu”.

Unfortunately, media supports this phenomenon by broadcasting love songs sung by kid boyband or girlband. It can be known vividly when you see live music programme, such as Dahsyat and Inbox. There are lots of children love and sing together their songs.  Unlike in my era, in this era there is no more music programme such as Tralala trilili which only focusing in music for children—a place for children to access their world in music properly. Media should take a part in educating children not only thinking about market demand. Last but not least, this posting does not mean to judge Coboy Junior or sort bad, but it is just my opinion about phenomenon in children music today.

Football Chant

A football chant is a song or chant sung at football matches by the suporter. The football chant use to support the team that playing on the pitch. It can be historic, dating back to the formation of the club, adaptations of popular songs, or spontaneous reactions to events on the pitch.
United Kingdom is the country that famous with the football chant. A football match without chant is nothing.
I think the British are very creative with the chants. A chant also used to mock the rival club. Like Manchester City did to Manchester United, which takeover by the Glazers, and caused some financial problems within the club:
U-N-I-T-E-D,

That spells f*****g debt to me,

With a knick-knack paddywhack give a dog a bone,

Ocean Finance on the phone!
Ocean Finance is a UK company that offering loans.

A football chant used to embrace something like Stoke City fans do. Following Arsene Wenger labeling Stoke City a “rugby team,” due to their hard tackling and long ball game. Then they start singing “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot,” the unofficial anthem of England’s Rugby Union side.
To make a joke about the football player, supporters use chants. Like Wigan Athletic fans do to Dimitar Berbatov, due to his resemblance to Professor Snape in Harry Potter movie.

“There’s only one Alan Rickman!”

Actually, there are still many examples of football chants. Probably I will explain about it in another post :)

P.S. I hope someday I can sing along with other football fans in England stadium

The Horror Story behind Nina Bobo Song

Have you ever sing Nina Bobo to your younger brother/sister? "Nina bobo, ooh Nina bobo. Kalau tidak bobo, digigit nyamuk. Bobo lah sayang, bobo anakku, kalau tidak bobo digigit nyamuk"

I don't know whether this story is true or not, but you shouldn't read this post at night, or you will can't sleep! :P

Actually, Nina in this song is a Indonesian-Dutch children who was born in 1871. Her full name is Helenina Mustika Van Rodjnik. Her mom is a Javanese dancer and her dad is a Dutch named Van Rodjnik. When Helenina still very young, she often couldn't sleep at night, then her mom always sang a hum to made Nina slept. She couldn't sleep before before her mom sang for her. Then Van Rodjnik asked her to make the lyrics of the hum. In Nina's house there were many mosquitoes every night, so her mom made the lyrics like we used to hear right now.
In 1875, Helenina was really ill. She got high fever, and it was prolonged. So every night, her mom sang to her to made Nina slept. Then in 1878, Helenina passed away when she was still 6 yeras old. Her mom couldn't take her dead. A week later, Van Rodjnik found his wife sang Nina Bobo in the bathroom. His wife said that she heard Helenina's cry there. After that, because of deep sadness, she often sang that song.
In 1929, Helenina's mom passed away. Van Rodjnik lived alone in his house. A few horror things happened in the house, like voice of baby's crying, but he didn't care about that. One day, in the midnight, he was awoken by a crying girl and said, "Papa... why you didn't sing for Nina?" After that incident, he had kind of distracted mind. Finally, he always sang the Nina Bobo song every night, alone in his room, until he passed away. BELIEVE IT OR NOT?

Keroncong

Keroncong music came to Indonesia in 1512, when Portuguese Expedition led by Alfonso de Albuquerque came to Maluku and Melaka. Portuguese sailor brought Fado music, Portuguese folk song that has Arabic tone.Nowadays, there are many music instruments that used in Keroncong orchestra, such as ukulele cuk, ukulele cak, acoustic guitar, violin, flute, cello, and kontrabas.

There are 4 steps of development of Keroncong music in Indonesia:
a. Tempo Doeloe (1880–1920)
The example of Kronchong Tempo Doeleoe songs are Terang Bulan, Potong Padi, Nina Bobo,     Sarinande, O Ina Ni Keke, Bolelebo, and many others.
b.  Kronchong Eternity (1920–1960)
The most well-known song in this period is Bengawan Solo composed by Gesang, written in 1940, told about Solo River
c.  The Era of Modern Kronchong (1960–2000)
Campursari is an example of song from this era. Campursari is a mixture of gamelan music and kronchong
d.  Millennium Kroncong (2000–present)
Bondan Prakoso & Fade 2 Black is an example of a group that mix Keroncong with Hip Hop

Now, we will share the clips of Bengawan Solo, the most popular Keroncong song in Indonesia, and also the lyrics in Bahasa Indonesia and English:

Bengawan Solo Solo River
Riwayatmu ini This is your story
Sedari dulu jadi Have been since earliest times
Perhatian insani Of sentient attention

Musim kemarau In the dry season
Tak seb'rapa airmu Your water is not much
Di musim hujan, air In the rainy season, water
Meluap sampai jauh Spills reaching far distances

Chorus:
Mata airmu dari Solo Your water springs forth from Solo
Terkurung Gunung Seribu Isolated by Mount Seribu
Air mengalir sampai jauh Water flows to reach far distances
Akhirnya ke laut Eventually to the sea

Itu perahu Those boats
Riwayatnya dulu In the past
Kaum pedagang s'lalu The merchant folk had always
Naik itu perahu Sailed in those boats

"PARADISE" BY COLDPLAY

When she was just a girl
She expected the world
But it flew away from her reach so

She ran away in her sleep and dreamed of Para-para-paradise,
Para-para-paradise, Para-para-paradise

Every time she closed her eyes

When she was just a girl
She expected the world But it flew away from her reach
and the bullets catch in her teeth

Life goes on, it gets so heavy

The wheel breaks the butterfly
Every tear a waterfall
In the night the stormy night s
he'll close her eyes
In the night the stormy night away she'd fly
and dreams of Para-para-paradise Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise
  Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh She'd dream of Para-para-paradise Para-para-paradise Para-para-paradise
Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh-oh

lalalalalalalalalalala And so lying underneath those stormy skies
She'd say, "oh, ohohohoh I know the sun must set to rise"

This could be Para-para-paradise
Para-para-paradise Para-para-paradise
Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh

This could be Para-para-paradise Para-para-paradise
This could be
Para-para-paradise Oh oh oh oh oh oh-oh-oh-oh
"
